How lovely he is—a fair-dealing young gazelle!
O fair one with a glance half granting, half denying,
Sparing with rebuffs, generous with meetings.
Close-fisted is thy love, but open-handed thy greeting.

If he breathes magic with his eyelids,
The magic she breathed from her eyes that enthralled me,
He wards me with incantations from his sidelock.
I charm away with exorcising lines if she frowns.

His face shines above his form—
Her cheek outshines the full moon majestically beaming
A full moon of dark nights above a bough on the dune.
O'er the delicate branch of the waving twig.

يثني عناني عنه إلا التقى
I encounter no reprover concerning his beauty
No critic can truly blame her beauty,
Who turns my reins away from him—save piety.
Naught but the fear of God could turn my rein from her.
