A companion once told us

A friend of old recounted to us

on the authority of the Patcher of the Tear and the Mender of Rents:

Of mending rents and darning worn patches

كلاهما قال أتينا إلى

كلاهما قال أتينا إلى

إبليس في زمرة أهل العقوق

إبليس في زمرة أهل العقوق

Both said: We came to

Both said, we came to

Iblis, in the company of those undutiful to their parents,

Iblis among the band of the disobedient

نأخذ عنه من وصاياه ما

نأخذ عنه من وصاياه ما

ينفع من يسحب ذيل الفسوق

ينفع من يسحب ذيل الفسوق

to receive from him such counsel as

To receive from him counsels that

benefits whoever drags the train of debauchery.

May benefit those who drag the trains of misdeeds

قال اصنعوا ما شئتم واحذروا

قال اصنعوا ما شئتم واحذروا

أن تحسنوا الظن بود العلوق

أن تحسنوا الظن بود العلوق

He said: Do whatever you wish, and beware

He said, do what you will but beware

of trusting in the affection of catamites.
