    The speakers have indeed failed to describe one like me.

    I am the sea, but the sea has no shore.

    لِعاجِزَةٌ عَن فِعلِ مِثلِ أَوائِلُ

    Later generations are indeed unable to do as I do;

    earlier generations are indeed unable to do the like.

    The nights foolishly seek to lower my worth,

    and how could their calamities bring down the throne?

    Through my prudence and resolve, I attained glory that exalted the sky.

    Through my patience and diligence, the gifts of greatness are mine.

    And my eye has sworn in truth never to behold slumber,

    nor go blind in error while the dark nights are legions.

    The breeze of radiance sways my sides—yes—

    when my fingertips set the reed pen swaying.

    سِواهُ نَزيفٌ قَد سَقَتهُ البَلابِلُ

    God bless one like me, enraptured by its scratching;

    another is drunk, given drink by the nightingales.

    So how splendid is one like me! And how splendid that there have risen

    above the summits of the celestial spheres the virtues that are mine!
