    She drank from a convivial companion’s draught.

    So afterward there was a spark of fire within her.

    O my drinking companion, bring us some of it

    before dawn, and pass it round in the predawn gloom.

    Passion for the wine-jar wore down our

    endurance; we fell for a borrowed gleam,

    beautiful, from a Mihrjan festival of worlds,

    sought from it for her sons.

    فَبِهِ ما أَنتَ ذو دَنَسِ

    O her young man, rise for it in haste;

    for through it you bear no stain.

    In Iraq it was said, from a crushing burden,

    drowsiness from it in al-Andalus.

    So abandon sorrow, O soul,

    for a youth defiled by our reproach.

    And ask the tavern-keeper for his daughter,

    so that you, O soul, may be with the soul.

    A bewitching woman describes the tawny wine

    to a youth never compared with another.

    وَلَها أَسجُدُ مِدلَها وَمِسِ

    So to her I bow, O Ibn Hani, then;

    and before her I prostrate myself, love-bewildered; and touch her.
