O soul, is there any repentance

    Before separation and departure?

Life is a dream; what is seen

By the eye is a passing shadow.

The people are dead in the garments

Of the living, with fleeting folly.

    Blind, and yet—O wonder!—

They may be seen as possessing eyes.

Why do I see this one groaning

    On his bed from ailments,

And see him, a few days later,

Already vanished at the mountain’s foot?

Why do I see this one in

Sorrow, and that one in joy?

How many emirs lie beneath your sandal,

    And mighty men, and heroes!

By God, if the dust spoke

To us, it would say: “In me lie the dynasties.”

    Lofty maxims of Abu Ali,

    Neither spurned nor found tiresome.
