Men have passed away, and houses, and dynasties,

And Persians, and Turks, and non-Arabs, and Arabs.

    Existence, extinction; God, permanence.

What wonder at this—then wonder, then wonder!

    A king, a vizier, a prince, a throne.

A curtain and a crown, silver and gold.

A boon companion, a night companion, an intimate, a sitting companion.

A boy, and a cup, and a bowl, and grapes.

    Bliss, serenity, majesty, perfection.

Then good fortune, then glory, then striving for a desire.

    Extinction, obliteration, departure, disappearance.

So leave this and forsake that—the dictate of good conduct.

Time and circumstance—two dreams of one given to sleep.

And life is delusion, hardship, and weariness.

And one day is bliss, and another day hardship.

And worldly life is scant enjoyment and toil.
