    Can the guide of all worlds to right guidance die,

    the chosen one, selected from all humankind?

    Can our Messenger, master of miracles, die,

    our Prophet, who withheld none of his guidance from us?

    Can God’s beloved, Taha, Muhammad, die?

    Now the calamity is immense for desert dwellers and townspeople alike.

    جودي عَلى روحِ الوُجودِ بِمُنهَمِر

    Pour forth tears for our loss of the best of humankind;

    pour forth torrents for the spirit of existence.

    Pour forth, for the beloved Muhammad has died.

    Who is there for existence, and who has eyes for all it holds?

    أَي طَهَ نِمتَ فَذابَ جُلودُ الحَجَر

    O Taha, you slept, and all sank into sorrow;

    O Taha, you slept, and the skins of stones melted.

    مِنها لَقَد عَمَّ الرَدى وَدَنا العُمُر

    O Taha, you slept, and the lash of calamity fell;

    through it, ruin spread everywhere, and life drew toward its end.

    فيكَ الَّذي لِفِراقِهِ جَفَّ الثَمَر

    O grave of Taha, within you lies the intercessor for humankind;

    within you lies the one whose parting dried the fruit.

    فيكَ الَّذي لِرَحيلِهِ رَحَلَ السَمَر

    O grave of Taha, within you lies the hope we longed for;

    within you lies the one whose departure sent evening conversation away.

    يا ذا الضَريحِ اِسمَع مَراثِيَ مِن دُرَر

    O keeper of the tomb, answer Hassan’s call, answer;

    O keeper of the tomb, hear my elegies of pearls.
