كَأسٌa cup أَلّاقٌbrilliantly shining كَواكِبُهاits stars
كَأسٌ أَلّاقٌ كَواكِبُها
تِرياقٌan antidote بُرءٌa cure مَشرَبُهاits draught
تِرياقٌ بُرءٌ مَشرَبُها
A cup whose stars shine brilliantly;
Its draught is an antidote, a cure.
أَفلَتset فيهاwithin it يوحٌYūḥ (the sun) طِفلاًas a child
أَفلَت فيها يوحٌ طِفلاً
لاno رَيبَdoubt لِيوحٍfor Yūḥ مَغرِبُهاits setting-place
لا رَيبَ لِيوحٍ مَغرِبُها
Yūḥ set within it as a child;
No doubt, it is Yūḥ's setting-place.
فيهاwithin it لِلشَفعِfor the pair حَياتُهُماthe life of them both
فيها لِلشَفعِ حَياتُهُما
بِهاthrough it مَشهورٌrenowned مَوكِبُهاits procession
بِها مَشهورٌ مَوكِبُها
In it, the pair have their life;
Through it, its procession is renowned.
نَشرُspreading اِستِبشارِgladness هَلاكُdestruction عُناًhardship
نَشرُ اِستِبشارِ هَلاكُ عُناً
كُلُّevery اِستِحسانٍadmiration مَطلَبُهاits aim
كُلُّ اِستِحسانٍ مَطلَبُها
A spreading of gladness, the death of hardship;
Every kind of admiration is its aim.
ماnot لاحَتit appeared إِلّاexcept فيin جَذلٍjoy
ما لاحَت إِلّا في جَذلٍ
بِنَعيمِin the bliss of المُنعِمِthe benefactor مَلعَبُهاits playground
بِنَعيمِ المُنعِمِ مَلعَبُها
It never appeared except amid joy;
Its playground lies in the benefactor's bliss.
مِحَنٌtrials إِحَنٌgrudges أَشجانُsorrows سُدىًin vain
مِحَنٌ إِحَنٌ أَشجانُ سُدىً
مِنهاfrom them مُنجاةٌdeliverance مَركَبُهاits vessel
مِنها مُنجاةٌ مَركَبُها
Trials, grudges, sorrows—all in vain;
Its vessel offers deliverance from them.
أَنَديمُO drinking companion أَدِرpass around لِيَto me رُوحَthe spirit of هَناًbliss
أَنَديمُ أَدِر لِيَ رُوحَ هَناً
قَدindeed طابَwas pleasing لِمِثلِيَto one like me أَطيَبُهاits finest
قَد طابَ لِمِثلِيَ أَطيَبُها
O drinking companion, pass me the spirit of bliss;
Its finest has indeed pleased one like me.
كَأساًa cup مِنof أُنسٍfellowship صافِيَةًclear
كَأساً مِن أُنسٍ صافِيَةً
أَبدىdisplayed الأَدابَgood manners مُهَذَّبُهاone refined by it
أَبدى الأَدابَ مُهَذَّبُها
A clear cup of fellowship;
The one refined by it displayed good manners.
دَعleave ذاthe one with مُهراقِsomething spilled عَلىover طَلَلٍa ruin
دَع ذا مُهراقِ عَلى طَلَلٍ
وَأِدِرand pass around ماwhile أَومَضَgleamed مُطرِبُهاits joy-bringer
وَأِدِر ما أَومَضَ مُطرِبُها
Leave the one with [tears] spilled over a ruin;
And pass it round while its joy-bringer gleams:
غَرّاءَradiant أَشِعَّتُهاits rays شُهُبٌshooting stars
غَرّاءَ أَشِعَّتُها شُهُبٌ
حَمراءَred شَهيدُa witness مُجرِّبُهاone who has tried it
حَمراءَ شَهيدُ مُجرِّبُها
Radiant, its rays are shooting stars;
Red—one who has tried it bears witness.
