فيin موقفٍa battlefield وقفَstood الحمامُDeath ولمand did not يَزِغswerve
في موقفٍ وقفَ الحمامُ ولم يَزِغ
عنfrom ساحتيهits two sides وزاغتand swerved الابصارُthe eyes
عن ساحتيه وزاغت الابصارُ
On a battlefield, Death stood and did not swerve
from either of its sides, though eyes swerved.
فقناًand spears يسيلُstream منwith الدماءblood علىonto قناspears
فقناً يسيلُ من الدماء على قنا
بطوالهنَّby their long shafts تُقَصَّرُare shortened الاعمارُlifespans
بطوالهنَّ تُقَصَّرُ الاعمارُ
And spears stream with blood onto spears;
by their long shafts, lives are cut short.
ورؤوسand heads أبطالٍof heroes تطايَرُfly about بالظبيby sword blades
ورؤوس أبطالٍ تطايَرُ بالظبي
فكأنّهاso it is as though they تحتbeneath الغبارthe dust غبارُdust
فكأنّها تحت الغبار غبارُ
And heroes' heads are sent flying by sword blades,
as though, beneath the dust, they too were dust.
