How dear to me is the River Ma‘qil, where

my heart finds refuge from my cares.

Sweet it is: whenever a drinker drinks deeply from it,

it is as though he drinks a beloved’s saliva.

It flows smoothly, and in its clarity seems

like tears streaming down a young maiden’s cheeks.

And when the winds sweep over its broad expanses,

it is like a coat of mail polished by a burnisher.

And the Tigris, when its waves roar, seems

a king exalted out of fear and held in reverence.

And it is like a ruby, or eyes

of blue, fitted to one another and joined.

So sweet it is, you cannot tell whether its water is water

when tasted, or smooth, pure wine.

And with a flood-tide after a receding ebb, it has

two armies: one retreats, and the other advances.

And when you look at al-Ubulla, you imagine it

part of the Garden of Paradise, as pictured in the mind.

Many a dwelling on its river—Joy has sworn

that it will alight nowhere else.

And those palaces seem like brides,

while the garden holds the jewels of a maiden trailing her robes.

The songstress birds sang throughout its reaches,

a lilt beside which the ‘First Heavy’ rhythm seems slight.

And those branches embraced, calling to mind

the day of farewell, as their caravan departed.

Spring settled there, and its hand wove

robes through which the knots of care unravel.

Some brocaded, some sashed, some cloaked,

some striped, some richly patterned, some thinly woven.

So you imagine this an eye, this a mouth, and this

a cheek, now nibbled, now kissed.
