And marigolds, like the cheek of a lovesick lover

whose heart throbs for fear of parting,

are suns that, when their sun rises,

rise, and at the hour of sunset, set.

They open when it appears, rejoicing in its light,

as one who judges rightly rejoices in a sound judgment.

And they close when darkness comes, as though it were

a watcher over them, while light is their beloved.
