ملأتhave filled بقاعthe expanses of الأرضthe earth خيلُthe cavalry of جنودهhis armies
ملأت بقاع الأرض خيلُ جنوده
فقرونُهاso its outer ranks مقرونةٌare joined بحدودهِto his frontiers
فقرونُها مقرونةٌ بحدودهِ
The cavalry of his armies has filled the earth’s expanses;
Its outer ranks are joined to his frontiers.
كتموجlike the billowing of الأجناحwings سودُblack بُنودِهِhis banners
كتموج الأجناح سودُ بُنودِهِ
وتبلُّجand the brightening of الأصباحdawns لمعُthe gleam of حديدهhis steel
وتبلُّج الأصباح لمعُ حديده
His black banners billow like wings,
And his steel gleams like the breaking dawn.
فكأنماso it is as though جَمَعَhe gathered النهارthe day بضوئهwith its light
فكأنما جَمَعَ النهار بضوئه
والليلَand the night فيin أغوارهhis lowlands ونجودهand his uplands
والليلَ في أغواره ونجوده
So it is as though he has gathered day with its light,
And night, in his lowlands and uplands.
يَعياis too difficult عنfor الأَبصارthe eyes حُصرُthe counting of قريبهhis nearer ranks
يَعيا عن الأَبصار حُصرُ قريبه
ويُعاجزand defies الأفكارthoughts نيلُreaching بعيدهhis farther ranks
ويُعاجز الأفكار نيلُ بعيده
His nearer ranks defy the eye’s reckoning,
And his farther ranks defy the reach of thought.
يغدوhe goes forth in the morning ويتبعهand follows him الردىdeath فصدودهso its withdrawal
يغدو ويتبعه الردى فصدوده
بصدورهwith his departure وورودُهand its arrival بورودهwith his arrival
بصدوره وورودُه بوروده
He goes forth in the morning, and death follows him; its withdrawal
Is with his departure, and its arrival with his arrival.
