أبا يوسفٍ إنّي نظرتُ فلم أجد

أبا يوسفٍ إنّي نظرتُ فلم أجد

على الفحص رأياً صحَّ منكَ ولا عَقدا

على الفحص رأياً صحَّ منكَ ولا عَقدا

O Abu Yusuf, I have examined, but have not found

O Abu Yusuf, I looked but did not find

under scrutiny, any sound opinion or conviction of yours.

In your judgment a sound opinion or bond.

وصرتَ حكيماً عند قوم إذا امرؤٌ

وصرتَ حكيماً عند قوم إذا امرؤٌ

بلاهم جميعاً لم يجد عندهم عندا

بلاهم جميعاً لم يجد عندهم عندا

And you have become a sage among people: if a man

You became a wise man in the eyes of people when

tests them all, he finds nothing of substance in them.

A confused man cannot find any support from them.

أتقرن إلحاداً بدين محمدٍ

أتقرن إلحاداً بدين محمدٍ

لقد جئت شيئاً يا أخا كندةٍ إدّا

لقد جئت شيئاً يا أخا كندةٍ إدّا

Do you join heresy to the religion of Muhammad?

Do you associate atheism with the religion of Muhammad?

You have indeed done something monstrous, O kinsman of Kindah.

Indeed you have come, O brother of Kindah, with something monstrous.

وتخلط يوناناً بقحطان ضلَّةً

وتخلط يوناناً بقحطان ضلَّةً

لعمري لقد باعدتَ بينهما جدا

لعمري لقد باعدتَ بينهما جدا

And you mix the Greeks with Qahtan in error;

And you mix Greece with Qahtan in error,

by my life, you have indeed set the two very far apart.

By my life, you have put great distance between them.
