Nothing, O hunter, is lovelier than a shrike,
Nothing is better, O hunter, than a rifle
Which distracts you, as you pursue it, from the chase.
That distracts you with its firing from firing.

Like quail, when it appears,
Like a swift bird when it appears
To kill it, inwardly nursing a grudge against it.
Bending to kill it on its perch.

With a bent beak like the tip of a reed stalk
Away from an opening like the gut's, gulping food;
Unlike the poisonous sting of a scorpion.

Looking like a cloud-bank looming over firm, level ground;
That appears like an ostrich over its eggs.

Harsher than the sting of fire's heat in the flesh.
More painful than the burn of hot fire on the skin.

To the basin of death without hands or skin.

مُحَكَّماً فيه حكمَ الليث في النَقَدِ
You see two alike: this one overpowers that one,
I saw one endowed with conquering power
Granted dominion over it, as a lion over small sheep.
Judging with the justice of a lion in war.

The extent of the handiwork of the One, the Only.
The measures of the working of the One, the Absolute.
