May I be denied the beloved's hand reaching back

    To undo her waist-wrap and girdle;

And may I be abased, never joining the morning drinking-time

Of my boon companions to the hours of my evening drinking,

If ever I take a miser as a brother in this world,

Even if he is in perfect accord with me.

I sincerely befriend a man; he grows fond of me, and we proceed

    Together, through disagreement and agreement.

And affection's covenant is preserved whenever

We are safe from hypocrisy in our affection.

And I cut off every kindly man who keeps up ties

If he mingles his nature with pretense.

And many a man follows up a pleasant meeting—

One that brings joy—with an unhappy parting.
