May God curse the craft of poetry! What

kinds of fools we have encountered in it!

They prefer its uncommon language to what

is easy and clear to listeners.

And they deem the absurd something sound,

    and worthless speech something precious.

They do not know what is right in it, nor do they

realize, in their ignorance, that they are ignorant.

So they are blamed by those other than us,

yet, in truth, we consider them excusable.

Poetry is only what is harmonious in composition,

though its qualities may take many forms.

    قد أقامت له الصدور المتونا

    So one part comes to resemble another;

its openings have set its body upright.

Every meaning in it comes to you just as

you would wish it to be, had it not existed.

So it goes beyond clear expression, until

in its beauty it almost becomes visible to beholders.

So it is as though its words were faces,

and its meanings were fitted into it as eyes.

Surpassing in its reach the measure of wishes,

it thus makes its reciters shine through its beauty.

So when you praise a noble man in verse,

you seek in it the ways of those who speak at length.

So you make the love prelude simple and accessible,

and make the praise truthful and clear.

And you avoid whatever offends the ear,

even if its wording is metrical.

And when you compose it as satire,

you spurn the ways of those who speak obscenely.

So you make its plain speaking a remedy,

and make its insinuation a hidden disease.

And when you weep in it for the departed,

    shedding tears kept safe within the eyes;

then, if you reproach, you mix into your promise

a threat, and with sternness, gentleness.

So you leave the one you reproached

wary yet secure, honored and discerning.

    وإذا ريم أعجز المعجزينا

    And when recited, it makes everyone desire it;

and when attempted, it defeats even those who defeat others.
