Indeed, merlins are the lightest-spirited of birds,

Yes, and the swiftest of them to succeed in the chase.

    سفع الخدود تزين الكفَّ والراحا

    Blue-hued, their eyes are like those of wild beasts;

Dusky-cheeked, they adorn the hand and palm.

    Brocaded, their cloaks embroidered,

They plainly reveal the wisdom of the Most Merciful.

And a merlin I took from a towering mountain's crest,

A lofty height that shows you human figures as phantoms.

    Thick-jointed, broad-nostriled—when

It breathes without panting, you would think it roused with excitement.

You see its back and both its flanks and take them for

Tablets, with letter-like markings inscribed upon them.

With a sturdy head like a pounding stone, rising

Above a hooked beak that brings grievous torments to its prey.

Its talons seem the claws of a maned lion,

    Piercing hides and gashing bodies.

It turns an eye that sees what you cannot perceive,

    Far-reaching in its gaze, keen-sighted.

It swoops like the wind, or like an arrow cleaving the air,

Or like a shooting star when it darts away in clear brilliance.

One can almost discern what its heart conceals

Of rancor, whenever it quivers or cries out.

    نَسفاً فيقبض أجساماً وأرواحا

    Made master of birds' lives, it sweeps them away;

With a violent sweep, it seizes bodies and souls.

As though they had locked their souls within their hides,

And by force it became a key to those locks.
