وكان لنا أصدقاءٌ حُماةٌ

And we had a dove’s friends,

And we had friends who were protectors,

and wicked foes—yet they did not live forever.

And wicked enemies—yet none lived forever.

تَساقَوا جميعاً كؤوس الحِمام

فمات الصَديق ومات العَدو

فمات الصَديق ومات العَدو

They all gave one another the cups of death to drink;

They all shared the cups of death:

so the friend died, and the foe died.

So the friend died, and the enemy died.
