يُؤَمَّلُplace hope in أهْلُthe people of الشَّامِal-Sham (the Levant) عَمْراًAmr وإنَّنِيand indeed I
لآمُلُI surely hope for عَبْدَAbd (servant of) اللَّهِAllah (God) عِنْدَat الْحَقائِقِthe truths
The people of Syria set their hopes on ʿAmr, while I
The people of al-Sham pin their hopes on Amr, while I
surely set mine on ʿAbd Allāh when truths are put to the test.
surely place mine in Abd Allah when truth is at stake.
وَإنَّand indeed أبَاAbu (father of) مُوسَىMusa سَيُدْرِكَwill secure حَقَّنَاour right
إذْwhen مَاemphatic particle رَمَىhurled at عَمْراًAmr بِإحْدَىwith one of الصَّوَاعِقِthe thunderbolts
Indeed, Abū Mūsā will vindicate our right
And Abu Musa will surely secure our right
when he strikes ʿAmr with one of his thunderbolts
when he hurls one of the thunderbolts at Amr,
وَحَقَّقَهُand presses him حَتَّىuntil يَدُرَّthrobs وَرِيدُهُhis jugular vein
وَنَحْنُand we عَلَىover ذَاكُمْthat (addressing you all) كَأحْنَقِlike the angriest حَانِقِangry man
and establishes it, until ʿAmr’s jugular gushes;
and presses him until his jugular throbs,
and at that we shall be as furious as the most wrathful man.
while we, over that, are like the angriest of angry men.
عَلَىdespite أنَّthe fact that عَمْراًAmr لاnot يُشَقُis broken through غُبَارُهُhis dust
إذَاwhen مَاemphatic particle جَرَىraced بِالْجَهْدِwith utmost effort أهْلُriders of السَّوَابِقthe fleet steeds
Yet no one can outstrip ʿAmr
Yet none can break through Amr's dust
when the riders of the fleetest steeds race all-out.
when riders of fleet steeds race with all their might.
فَلِلَّهِso, to God! مَاwhat يُرمَىis assailed الْعِرَاقُIraq وَأهْلُهُand its people
بِهِwith it مِنْهُfrom him إنْif لَمْdoes not يَرْمِهِassail him بِالْبوائِقِwith calamities
By God, what Iraq and its people will suffer
So, by God, what will be hurled at Iraq and its people
from ʿAmr because of Abū Mūsā, unless he strikes him with calamities!
by him, unless Abu Musa hurls calamities at him!
