دَعنْleave aside يَاO مُعَاوِيَMu'awiya مَاwhat لَنْwill not يَكُونَاbe
فَقَدْfor indeed حَقَّقَhas brought about اللهُGod مَاwhat تَحْذَرُونَاyou fear
Leave aside, O Mu'awiya, what will never be.
Leave, O Mu'awiya, what will never be,
For God has indeed brought about what you fear.
For God has realized what you fear.
أتّاكُمْhas come to you عَلِيٌّAli بِأهْلِwith the people of الْحِجَازِthe Hijaz
وَهْلِand the people of العِرَاقِIraq فَمَاso what تَصْنَعُونَاwill you do
Ali has come to you with the people of the Hijaz,
Ali has come upon you with the people of Hejaz
And the people of Iraq—so what will you do?
And Iraq, so what will you do?

On every sleek, fleet-footed mare,
On every well-rounded, white-faced maiden,
And every shaggy-maned, sturdy steed that delights the eyes.
And slender, delicate body, eyes delight.
عَلَيْهَاupon them فَوَارِسُhorsemen مَخْشِيَّةٌdreaded

Upon them ride dreaded horsemen,
Over them are horsemen fearsome as lions,
Like lions of the lair that have defended their lair.
Ferocious lions defending their dens.
يَرَوْنَthey regard الطِّعانَspear-fighting خِلالَamid العَجَاجِthe swirling dust

They regard spear-fighting amid the swirling dust,
They see the piercing through the rushes
And striking horsemen in the dust, as their creed.
And the striking of the horsemen in the fight as loans.
هُمُthey هَزَمُواrouted الجَمْعَthe host جَمْعَthe host of الزبَيرِal-Zubayr
وطَلْحَةَand Talha والْمَعشَرَand the company النَاكِثِينَاthe oath-breakers
They routed the host—the host of al-Zubayr,
They routed the army, the hosts of Zubayr
And Talha, and the company of oath-breakers.
And Talha and the oath-breaking band.
وَقَالُواand they said يَمِيناًan oath عَلىupon حَلْفَةِa sworn vow
لِنُهْدِيlet us offer إلىto الشَّامِal-Sham حَرْباًa war زَبُونَاfierce
And they said, swearing oath upon oath:
They swore an oath at Halqa
Let us offer to al-Sham a fierce war,
To lead against Syria a humiliating war,
تُشِيبُmakes gray النَّوَاصِيَthe forelocks قَبْلَbefore المَشِيبِthe time for graying
وَتُلْقِيand cast out الْحَوامِلُthe pregnant women مِنْهَاbecause of it الْجَنِينَاthe fetus
That grays forelocks before the time for graying,
That turns gray the side-locks before their greying
And pregnant women miscarry their unborn children because of it.
And causes the pregnant to miscarry what they carry.
فإِنْso if تَكْرَهُوُاyou hate المُلْكَdominion مُلْكَthe dominion of العِرَاقِIraq
فَقَدْfor indeed رَضِيَhave accepted الْقَوْمُthe people مَاwhat تَكْرَهُونَاyou hate
So if you hate dominion—the dominion of Iraq—
If you dislike the rule, the rule of Iraq,
The people have indeed accepted what you hate.
Then these people have approved what you dislike.
فَقُلْso say لِلْمُضَلِّلِto the misleader مِنْfrom وَائِلِWa'il
وَمَنْand whoever جَعَلَmade الْغَثthe lean يَوْماًonce سَمِينَاfat
So say to the misleader from Wa'il,
Say to the misguided one from Wail
And whoever once passed off the lean as fat:
Who once made the froth into cream one day:
جَعَلْتُمْyou have made عَلِيَّاAli وَأشْيَاعَهُand his followers

You have made Ali and his followers
You made Ali and his adherents
The equal of Hind's son—have you no shame
The peers of Ibn Hind, have you no shame?

And the son-in-law of the Messenger, and who is like him
When a day comes that turns locks gray?
If there comes a day that turns generations gray?
