تَوَدُّyou love عَدُوّيmy enemy ثُمَّthen تَزعُمُyou claim أَنَّنيthat I
تَوَدُّ عَدُوّي ثُمَّ تَزعُمُ أَنَّني
صَديقُكَyour friend إِنَّindeed الرَأيَjudgment مِنكَfrom you لَعازِبُsurely distant
صَديقُكَ إِنَّ الرَأيَ مِنكَ لَعازِبُ
You love my enemy, then claim that I am
You love my enemy, then claim that I
your friend—surely good sense has deserted you.
Am your friend; surely sound judgment is far from you.
وَلَيسَand is not أَخيmy brother مَنone who وَدَّنيloved me بِلِسانِهِwith his tongue
وَلَيسَ أَخي مَن وَدَّني بِلِسانِهِ
وَلكِنand yet أَخيmy brother مِنone who وَدَّنيloved me وَهوَwhile he غائِبُabsent
وَلكِن أَخي مِن وَدَّني وَهوَ غائِبُ
He is no brother of mine who professes love for me with his tongue;
And my brother is not one who loves me with his tongue,
rather, my brother is one who loves me even while away.
But my brother is one who loves me while he is absent.
