Through him Sama won freedom after bondage,
When delegations were slow to ransom them.
جُلودُهُمُtheir skins مِنَfrom العَثَراتِmissteps مُلسٌare smooth
نَقِيّاتٌclean إِذاwhen دَنِسَare stained الجُلودُthe skins
Their skins are smooth, free of missteps,
Clean when other skins are stained.
أولئِكَthose أُسرَتيare my kin سَأَذودُI shall defend عَنهُمon their behalf
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle خامَshrinks away عَنهُمfrom them مَنwhoever يَذودُdefends
These are my kin; I shall defend them,
When their defenders shrink away,
بِغُرٍّwith brilliant ones مِنof قَوافٍrhymes نافِذاتٍpiercing
جَوارِحَwounding فيin الصُدورِbreasts لَهاthey have خُدودُfurrows
With brilliant, piercing rhymes,
Wounding breasts and carving furrows in them.
فَشِعريfor my poetry كُلُّهُall of it بَيتانِtwo verses بَيتٌa verse
أُثَقِّفُهُI polish it وَقافِيَةٌand a rhyme شَرودُfar-roaming
All my poetry is two verses: a verse
I polish, and a rhyme that roams afar.
وَإِنّيand indeed I حاكِمٌam a judge فيin الشِعرِpoetry حُكماًin judgment
إِذاwhen ذُكِرَare mentioned القَوافيrhymes وَالنَشيدُand recitation
I am indeed a judge, passing judgment on poetry,
When rhymes and recitation are discussed.

وَشَرُّand the worst of الشِعرِpoetry ماwhat نَطَقَuttered العَبيدُslaves
The best poetry is that of the noblest men,
And the worst is what slaves utter.

People are my witnesses that I have spoken truth,
And truth is established by witnesses.
