اليَأسُdespair مِنfrom طولِlength الثَواءِthe stay رَواحُdeparture
وَالمُكثُand staying فيهِin it تَثَبُّتٌsteadfastness وَنَجاحُand success
Despair at a long stay leads to departure;
Despair not of relief though remote the goal
And remaining there brings steadfastness and success.
Stay fast and firm and you shall reach your soul
وَفيand in التَعَفُّفِself-restraint عَنfrom مسائِلَrequests جَمَّةٍmany

And in refraining from many requests
In modesty from probing into vice
That demean their asker lie modesty and success.
Lies virtue in this life and paradise
لاlet not يُلبِسَنَّever clothe أَخٌa brother أَخاهُhis brother مَواعِداًpromises
خُلُفاًunfulfilled كَماjust as لَبِسَput on السَرابَthe mirage رُماحُRumāḥ
Let no brother clothe his brother in promises
Let no man wear deceit as garb to cheat
That fail, as Rumāḥ clothed itself in mirage.
As mirage duped the lances in defeat
إِنَّindeed القَصائِدَthe poems خَيرَهاthe best of them وَشِرارَهاand the worst of them
مِثلُlike المَناهِلِwatering places عَذبَةٌsweet وَمِلاحُand briny
Indeed, poems—the best and worst of them—
For poems their virtues and their faults alike
Are like watering places: some sweet, some briny.
Are waters both fresh and bitter in their type
فَسَلِso ask الجَوادَthe generous man إِذاwhen تَبَرَّعَgives freely بِالنَدىwith bounty
وَذَرِand leave البَخيلَthe miser فَإِنَّهُfor he is أَنَاحُa groaner
So ask the generous man when he freely bestows bounty,
When a steed volunteers with gifts of dew
And leave the miser, for he is ever groaning.
Accept, and leave the miser his false pride too
لاnot يَستَويare equal ذوone possessing بَسطَةٍample power نالَattained العُلاeminence

وَمُقَصِّرٌand a laggard وَهنُweak القُوىin strength دَحداحُsquat
Not equal are a man of ample power who attained eminence
Not equal are the noble and the base
And a laggard, weak in strength and squat.
One reached the peak, one stumbled in disgrace
المُشتَريone who buys حُسنَgood الثَناءِpraise بِمالِهِwith his wealth
فَلَهُso he has بِذاكَthrough that مَزِيَّةٌdistinction وَرَباحُand profit
The man who buys fine praise with his wealth—
Who buys fair praise with riches has the gain
He thereby gains distinction and profit.
Profit and merit both his skill attain
وَالجَهلُand rashness ماas long as لَمnot تَخشَyou fear يَوماًone day ذِلَّةًhumiliation
غَيٌّerror وَعاقِبَةُand the outcome الحُلومِof forbearance صَلاحُgood
And rashness, unless one day you fear humiliation,
Ignorance fears no shame until the end
Is error; the outcome of forbearance is good.
Folly it is, though gentle be its blend
فَاِنفَعso help صَديقَكَyour friend ماas much as اِستَطَعتَyou can وَلاand do not تَخِمflag

إِنif جَدَّhe is earnest وَعاقِبَةُand the outcome الحُلومِof forbearance صَلاحُgood
So help your friend as much as you can, and do not flag
Aid your friend what you can, and curb excess
If he is earnest; the outcome of forbearance is good.
For gentleness leads on to righteousness
وَالمَرءُand a man يُدرِكُattains فيin الأَناةِdeliberation بِحِلمِهِby his forbearance

وَيُضامُand is wronged وَهُوَwhile he is مُدَرَّبٌexperienced مِلحاحُinsistent
And a man achieves his aims through deliberation and forbearance,
With patience one attains in life's quick tide
Yet he is wronged though seasoned and insistent.
Though buffeted, like wrestler well tried
وَمِنَand among الفُحولِthe sires أَبٌa father يَزينُlends honor وَشائِنٌand one who disgraces
وَمِنَand among الطَروقَةِthe female mates رِشدَةٌlawful union وَسِفاحُand fornication
And among sires is a father who lends honor, and one who disgraces;
The best of sires adorns; the worst demeans
And among female mates are lawful unions and fornication.
One shows wisdom; one shamelessness demeans
وَالوَعدُand promises مِنهُof it مُنجَزٌfulfilled وَخِلابَةٌand deception

And of promises, some are fulfilled and some deceit;
His word he keeps inviolate and rare
And among souls are the generous and the miserly.
While souls are generous, and souls are spare

And life is varied—two draughts; of the two,
Life is two drafts: one pure we love to quaff
One is pure milk that sustains by its taste, and one diluted milk.
One bitter poison that we only laugh
أَفنىannihilated القُرونَthe generations وَجَذَّand cut down كُلَّevery قَبيلَةٍtribe

Generations have been destroyed, and every tribe cut down
Time ruins generations without cease
By ravaging time, which uproots their planting.
Uprooting all their works in war's caprice

لَيلٌnight يَكُرُّrecurs عَلَيهِمُover them وَصَباحُand morning
The new is worn out, and a young man's strength sapped
It wears the new and frees the hands of youth
By night returning over them, and by morning.
Night's darkness comes, then morning's radiant truth
حَتّىuntil يَعودَhe becomes مِنَfrom البِلىdecay وَكَأَنَّهُand as though he were

Until, through decay, he becomes as though he were
Till worn by age he seems molded anew
A chipped cup, thin, broad, and shallow.
Like cup its cracks by bees cemented true

And he has a fringe of hair that cannot hide a louse,
He owns a cloak his lousy rags to hide
Scant in growth, as though he were a monkey.
Like shrub whose shoots spring fresh on every side

Then come the fated deaths; there is no escape from them;
Then death - no refuge can its stroke efface
Nay, no barrier stands before their arrows.
No shield withstand the fury of its chase
وَلَقَدand indeed سَمِعتُI have heard بِطائِراتٍof flying things فيin الدُجىthe darkness

And I have indeed heard of things that fly in darkness,
By night I've heard birds flying, yet none could see
Fugitives by day, though they have no wings.
Their wings by daylight - mystery!

كِنٌّa shelter يَكونُhe is بِهِin it وَلاnor بَرواحُopen ground
Rather, no sinner is hidden from his Lord,
No lewd man from his God can cover sin
Whether in a shelter he inhabits or out in the open.
Though doors and walls conceal him, shutting him in

And of piercing things whose arrows have transfixed hearts,
Glances like arrows pierce the heart outright
No gashes at all are seen from their wounds.
Yet no wounds show in cheek however white
وَلَقَدand indeed دَعانيcalled me لِلبَطالَةِto idle pleasure رَبرَبٌa herd

And indeed a herd of beauties called me to idle pleasure—
An imp with form of fawn put me to the test
Slender-waisted, delicate, like gazelles, fair of face.
Seduction's snare - I stood above the rest

They smile, revealing hail-white teeth, whose moisture seems
His smile concealed a frost, but setting seemed
Musk whose scent is mingled with blossoms.
Ambergris portions where sweet musk had streamed

They desire my company and are pleased with my character—
He sought my company, approved my ways
Fair and dusky women, lovely in their pearls.
A confluence of charms in perfect maze

So I answered them without a sin to arouse his doubts;
I answered with no rudeness, yet aloof -
For indecencies, suspicion and guilt suffice.
Chaste rigor foils temptation's weary proof
