I sleep, yet my heart stays wakeful for glory.

And my heart is indeed enamored of lofty aims.

Even if an ailment holds me back from pursuing them,

my striving in that pursuit surely endures.

When I seek rest, my soul finds it hard

to withdraw; noble instincts turn me back.

And I spend my night awake in thought, not eating,

while others, despite their afflictions, are sated and asleep.

My striving calls out whenever it senses slackness:

“Come now, ʿAbbād—where are those firm resolves?”

Then my hopes stir, and my resolves grow strong,

and routs remind me of their delights.
