By God, how sincere devotion endures in my mind

for him who is to generosity as the soul is to the body—

for the peerless Abu al-Jaysh, from whom my hand has won

the most precious treasure among mankind.

Sound in counsel amid the banners, his delight

lies in earnest striving and generosity, not in a life of ease.

When Glory sees him, she calls to him clearly:

“O delight of the eye—nay, O piece of the liver!”
