And a night in which we drank wine unceasingly,
We spent a night drinking wine
until dawn began to make its mark upon the night.
Until dawn started affecting the night

وجاءت نجوم الصبح تضرب في الدجى

فولت نجوم الليل والليل مقهور
And the stars of dawn came, striking through the darkness,
The morning stars came beating the darkness
so the stars of night fled, and night was vanquished.
The night stars fled and the night was defeated

ولم يعدنا هم ولا عاق تكدير
So we enjoyed pleasures at their sweetest,
Of pleasures, the most fragrant is sorrow
and no worry visited us, nor did distress impede us.
No worry or grief remained to disturb us

ولكن ليالي الوصل فيهن تقصير
Only, had it lasted longer, joy would have endured;
If it were prolonged, pleasure would endure
and yet the nights of union are too short.
But nights of union are too short
