My master, since my youth you have accustomed me to nobility,
clouds rain them down from his two palms.
Sending clouds to water those you favour.

I obeyed you in private and in public, striving hard,
I obeyed you openly and in secret, striving,
yet reproach alone was my reward.
Yet nothing was my reward but blame.

I strove with all my strength to please you,
but a veil stood between me and attaining it.
Though no door stood open to me.

Did I find with you but harshness and rebuke,

I fled to save myself, seeking relief for my soul,
I decided to flee, to seek some respite
though life's sweetness away from you was bitter sap.
For my soul, though life without you is but tears,

Nothing stirred me but your messenger, when
It was your messenger that drove me away
riding camels bore him to me across the rock-hard hills.
His hooves striking sparks from the hillsides.

You'd think a falcon flew with my saddle,

But for all the distance between us, I am still
in my resolve that there should be no return.
Resolved never to return.

Your grace lies in forgoing reproach, for it is,
Your noble nature makes reproach needless,
by the honor due you, sword-edges and spears in my heart.
For your rights hold my heart captive.

When a blessing is tainted by hurt,
When bounty is mixed with harm
it is nothing but an ordeal and torment.
It becomes but trial and torment.

Do not close your hand to me,
by your fortune, a loss to glory and its ruin.
For to deny me is to destroy glory.

No misfortune can darken the horizon.
