At the rocky ridge of al-An'amayn, they have a camel-driver,
With the firm stride of the elegant ones, they have a guide,
bare-shinned, melodious, swift of step.
A gazelle leading them, its leg lifted lightly.

No ill-omened birds appeared when we departed,
No partridges witnessed when we departed,
nor did ibex appear at Akbarah.
Nor did a wild cow bellow with the greatest mooing.

At Naziratayn they were favored with mothers nursing newborn young,
Her two eyes are endowed with a shelter
among the white gazelles, lovely to behold.
From sights, her gaze is beautiful.

They came on the right, like golden beads
They came on the right as though pieces
following one another on a string, softly jingling.
Followed in order, for them a little string.

They swung each neck and head,
They struck with every old and new thing,
curved, its forepart like a blade.
As though its leader were a young branch.

They had drawn upon their reserves until
Until they have announced, through the traces,
their strength was spent and the last reserves drained away.
The road, though the lote-trees have drooped.

Whenever we leaned over the saddles, they lowered
When we loathed the waterskins, she cast
their jaws toward their lower necks, all wet.
Her arms to make me pull it slowly.

He sang, then chanted, and they drew themselves up,
She sang, then stirred, so I fell into desire,
the woven bands and hanging coverings swaying with them.
Inclining with her are the hillocks and little mountains.

Is Uthman, son of Hayyan, son of Adam,
Aus ibn Hayyan ibn Adam
one in whose hair-partings a young goat urinates?
Insistent in his leave-taking, urinates.

And if I wished, it would already have grown still—
And if I wished, his ostrich had agitated,
his ostrich; and he knows what I mean.
And he would know what I say.

In your hand is a sharp sword, and upon you fine-linked mail,
With your palm a sharp sword, and upon you is scabbing,
like rainwater woven by the north wind.
Like the water of return the January rainclouds weave.

Nuwah sprang clear of its leading ranks,
The wailings have stripped themselves of their flutes
as a small herd races away from the wild cattle.
As the grazing sheep escapes from the cow.

What kept me from my sons and my far-spread wealth
The protectors of the tribe of Bani Washim prevented me,
was honor that wore me thin, and a heavy blood-debt.
Provisions that transported me, and blood copious.

And that wealth is divided, and that I,
And that the money is divided, and that I
somewhere on earth, have 'Abul—Death—as my ravager.
With some of the land, my camels roam.

And you hope that the fates of death will pass you by,
And you hope the fates visit you,
and fear that the Hasty One will hurry you away.
And you fear the quick hasten you.

As for every old she-camel and young male camel,
As for each little hill and Bekr,
they are among the aids to the journey.
It aids the wayfarer a little.

And as for every swift she-camel and swift male,
And as for each soft and hard ground,
a steady trot has worked upon its backbone.
It came in its places, vile.

So when I broke away, and my course was
So when I became destitute and my matter
straight, with no deviation to bend it,
Was straight, not bending with the changes,

across a waterless waste, with its wolf and raven,
On destitution in which I caused it to be destitute,
where a skilled desert guide is seldom found—
And I made the wilderness with it little,

consider what you say; long ago I was
Contemplate what you say, and I was formerly
a falcon, little given to pondering.
A little contemplative, of the tribe of Qutam.

A land cast them toward other mountains,
The land casts at them other mountains,
and there they veered aside, gaunt and withered.
So they are withering away in it slowly.

We cut the land away from us through our halts,
We divide the land from us by descending,
and halting cuts short the distance across the land.
And the land’s distance, descending divides it.

They found no pillows other than the earth,
They did not find cushions other than land,
their only addition a whip or a plaited rein.
Their increase being a whip or club.
