بَلَوناwe tested فَضلَbounty مالِكَyour wealth ياO اِبنَson of لَيلىLayla
فَلَمyet not تَكُyou were عِندَat عَثرَتِناour stumble أَخاناour brother
We tested the bounty of your wealth, O son of Layla,
We tested the favor of your friend O son of Layla
Yet you were no brother to us when we stumbled.
Yet you were not loyal to us in our stumbling
كَأَنَّas though رِحالَناour saddles فيin الدارِthe house حُلَّتwere unloaded
إِلىbeside عُفرِdust-colored اللَهازِمِthe jowls مِنfrom عُماناOman
As though our saddles had been unloaded in the house
As if our departure from the abode was resolved
Beside folk from Oman with dust-colored jowls.
To the wastes of defeat from Oman
فَكَيفَhow then جَمَعتَyou combined مَسأَلَةًbegging وَحِرصاًand greed
وَعِندَand in الفَقرِpoverty زَحّاراًan incessant grunter أُناناan incessant groaner
How, then, have you combined begging with greed,
So how did you combine begging and greed
While, in poverty, you constantly grunt and groan?
With, in poverty, self-importance, obstinacy
