فَإِنso if يَكُit is عاراًa disgrace ماwhat لَقيتُI endured فَرُبَّماthen often
أَتىcame upon المَرءَa man يَومَa day of السوءِmisfortune مِنfrom حَيثُwhere لاnot يَدريhe knows
If what I have endured is a disgrace, then often
a day of misfortune befalls a man from where he does not expect it.
وَلَمand did not أَرَI see ذاone possessing عَيشٍa livelihood يَدومُthat endures وَلاnor أَرىI see
زَمانَa time of الغِنىwealth إِلّاexcept قَريباًnear مِنَto الفَقرِpoverty
I have seen no one whose livelihood endures, nor do I see
a time of wealth except close to poverty.
وَمَنand whoever يَفتَقِرbecomes poor يَعلَمlearns مَكانَthe standing of صَديقِهِhis friend
وَمَنand whoever يَحيَlives لاnot يُعدَمlacks بَلاءًan ordeal مِنَfrom الدَهرِtime
Whoever becomes poor learns where his friend stands,
and whoever lives is never without an ordeal from time.
وَإِنّيand indeed I لِأَستَحييam truly ashamed إِذwhen كُنتُI was مُعسِراًhard-pressed
صَديقَيَّmy two friends وَالخِلّانُand the close companions أَنthat يَعلَمواthey know عُسريmy hardship
And indeed, when I am hard-pressed, I am ashamed
to let my two friends and close companions know my hardship.
وَأَهجُرُand I avoid خِلّانيmy companions وَماthough not خانَhas failed عَهديmy pledge
حَياءًout of shame وَإِكراماًand out of respect وَماand there is no بيin me مِنany كبرِarrogance
I withdraw from my companions, though my pledge remains unbroken,
out of shame and respect, with no arrogance in me.
وَأَكرِمُand I honor نَفسيmyself أَنto تُرىbe seen بيin me حاجَةٌa need
إِلىfor أَحَدٍanyone دونيbeneath me وَإِنeven if كانَhe is ذاpossessing وَفرِabundant wealth
I honor myself too much to be seen in need
of anyone beneath me, even if he has abundant wealth.
وَلَمّاand when رَأَيتُI saw المالَwealth قَدalready حِيلَa barrier was placed دونَهُbefore it
وَصَدَّتand turned away وُجوهٌfaces دونَaway from أَرحامِهاtheir kinship ties البُترِsevered
And when I saw that wealth had been put beyond reach,
and faces turned away from their severed ties of kinship,
جَعَلتُI made حَليفَthe ally of النَفسِthe soul عَضباًa keen sword وَنَثرَةًand a coat of mail
وَأَزرَقَand a blue spear مَشحوذاًsharpened كَخافِيَةِlike a secondary wing-feather of النَّسرِthe vulture
I made a keen sword and a coat of mail my soul's allies,
and a sharpened blue spear, like a vulture's wing-feather.
وَلاand no خَيرَgood فيin عَيشِthe life of أَمرىءٍa man لاnot تَرىyou see لَهُfor him
وَظيفَةَan allotted share حَقٍّrightfully due فيin ثَناءٍpraise وَفيand in أَجرِreward
There is no good in the life of a man for whom you see no
rightful share of praise and reward.
