A victory like the breaking of radiant dawn,

you reap it from the blows of bending spears.

This is fortune's splendid, radiant face,

gazing toward you with the countenance of one rejoicing.

Can the enemies withstand the onslaught of his might?

Have clouds any power against a raging, howling gale?

You presented them with battalions, arrayed upon

the earth's surface like ordered lines of script.

Of every fierce warrior who has often plunged into battle,

seared by the fires of war, set ablaze.

The peoples of the South were terrified by them, as though they were

herds of grazing beasts that bolted from a lion.

The eagles of your sword-edges choked on them after

drinking once and again of crimson blood.

They fell to ruin, and misery overtook them; likewise, whoever

opposes your majesty is the most wretched of men.

No defender among the sons of Ham remained whom you had not

made drink from the twin edges of severing swords.

Their scabbards have been emptied of them; how often

they have cast them aside as refuse, and are not yet sheathed.

Their striking edges shine white; should there stumble against them,

in battle's straits, a life's stride, it is cut short.

And neighing steeds, and thunderbolts, and stone-laden storms

poured down like rain-bearing clouds in full flow.

Thus you mastered the southern lands; never did rise

to such attainment the ambition of Alexander.

And you will gain al-Andalus, whose lands are drenched

by the hail of death from clouds of dust.

So lead the steeds against error, subjecting it to

death's judgment, and trample Caesar's baptismal pool.

Win with them vengeance that brings sleep; for long

al-Asfar's people have turned it against the faith.

As though in Egypt, after the long interval, an exchange were made

of Jawhar for Judar, through the sword of your might.

So he will surely traverse western and eastern lands,

and visit the Tigris and the Euphrates with an army.

And you will settle in the Two Sanctuaries, in a pure abode,

a refuge for your forefather, possessor of pure virtues.

What lies in the unseen must surely be fulfilled:

the bringing forth of what is promised and held in store.

So your wish is the nearest goal, even were it

to touch the stars; it is not beyond reach.

Whenever you seek to attain the farthest goal,

it yields its reins, obedient and easy to lead.

For you are indeed worthy of lofty glory, noble,

    chosen from a chosen stock.

You reap the fruits of glory from the sand-dune's branch,

and see the figures of graceful women in a brown lance's stature.

And you deem glory what you have built with a keen sword,

or gained beneath the gray, swirling dust.

Pure in roots, sacred in ancestral honor, pouring

forth generosity, lofty in honor, growing in renown.

Preserve noble deeds; for, as long as time endures, they are

radiant blazes made eternal on the face of the ages.

    وَكَذا اِقتِناءُ الحمدِ أَربَحُ مَتجَرِ

    Acquire only fine, praiseworthy deeds;

and thus acquiring praise is the most profitable trade.

You offer travelers the tale of your glory as ambergris,

and a pulpit's summit has been ennobled by praise of you.

May an army of yours never cease to assail the foes,

marching by night, with food-seeking eagles following it.

And may you attain what you hoped for, possessing all that

the seven seas upon the earth encircle.
