A victory has come to you, plainly auspicious,

Surpassing the past in its future reach.

And you recited victory's verses, themselves battalions,

And recounted them as a tradition, themselves lofty spears.

    God be praised—what a death-dealing resolve,

Where deadly arrows themselves glance off!

What is thumam grass before the terror of the might

That shattered the south after shattering the north?

How many a foe your resolve outwitted before this,

And you tore him like a threadbare cloak!

And whenever a host of his attacks you, it is

    Reserved for crushing and annihilation.

So you made blood, for the circling, thirsty blades,

A drinking-place, and captives from them spoils of war.

And you brought a fierce man low; humbled, he exchanged

The pride of upturned noses for the loss that humiliation brings.

And you left their dwellings prey to decay,

Their landmarks erased, their ruins prostrate.

Flight affords them no protection, nor

Can a swift-striding, trotting mount save them.

The raptor of his cunning swoops in their wake,

More surely guided to them than flocking sandgrouse.

If they traveled the Milky Way, not even

The stars' course would then lie beyond reach.

And far-reaching in ambition, he acquires

Only smooth mail with ample skirts.

And he sees high honor in what he acquires or reaps

From a keen sword or a slender, swaying spear.

An expert at breeding wars, tried and tested,

Valiant, unbowed, an avenger of old wrongs.

For anyone who strays from right guidance, his hand holds

A keen blade in its prime, setting the errant straight.

How often he struck the ears of east and west with a battle

That thereby became a proverb among proverbs.

His awe-inspiring majesty conquered hearts and mingled

With love as water mingles with red wine.

And his widely renowned deeds were recorded

As histories, so that their example might be followed.

And his are lofty honors, luminous and resplendent,

Manifest and dazzling in their virtues.

You have spared us setting out distinctions for them,

And furnishing proof and describing their state.

Who can rival his glory? Nay, where stands, beside

The surging flood, the scant moisture of trickling springs?

Who can rival his stature and majesty?

Can the noonday sun be compared with lamp-wicks?

For he is reality in nobility and wisdom,

And all others are tangled dreams and a phantom of fancy.

And he is foremost, carrying off glory's prize-reed,

And all others there are half-bred steeds or followers.

And one who watches hope's lightning from his cheerful face

Dispels black calamities, though they are nights.

God has something hidden in you that will grant this

Faith, one day, its far-off hopes.

Before long, you will humble Caesar,

And a cloud of ruin will drench al-Andalus,

Until you clothe his factions in humiliation,

And he becomes a captive to fetters and chains.

May you ever be victorious and remain upheld,

Striding proudly in ease, secure from decline.
