Will no banner of justice flutter in Egypt,

that the efforts of tyranny's rule might fail?

Will no blow against oppression halt its course,

so that the fracture may be mended and the rent sewn shut?

They came to us to support the prince, but now the

prince has no command—how can we believe?

Can reform be hoped for us, while our prince

is bound by the fetter of the occupier's power?

When he seeks one thing and they desire another,

he is forced to endorse what they sought and proclaim it.

We are bewildered: we cannot tell whether our rulers

are in London or in Egypt—how are we to tell?

    ومِثلُكَ أدرَى بالأَمورِ وأحذَقُ

    To you, Khedive of Egypt, I bring a complaint against you;

and one like you knows affairs better and is more astute.

You broke hearts that you had once mended,

so now we all hang our heads in humiliation.

And at the beginning of your rule, you had indeed set about

demolishing what they had previously built and fortified.

    فلما رَأَوا ذاكَ التَغافُلَ لَفَّقُوا

    They strove to see you turn a blind eye to them;

and when they saw that disregard, they fabricated lies.

Does it please you, my lord, that whenever you

seek to expand your authority, they constrict it?

Does that day at the borders please you, when they overstepped the

bounds with deeds that humiliate and oppress?

By God, unless you take affairs in hand while there is ample room,

you will be forcibly barred from doing so when matters grow tight.

And O ministers of gold and silver, awaken

to the vilest disgrace being fastened upon you.

How well you could have done without the office that

clothed you in garments of humiliation—yet God provides!

You betrayed your lord, who now lies bound

by your hands, in his fetters, without release.

And O valiant lord of Berlin, and Caesar,

and Joseph—grave peril closes in on Egypt.

And do not leave Greece unless they leave

Egypt to us; remain there forever if they remain.
