The soul was kept from attaining its wishes

by those allotted lifespans’ course, obedient to their decree.

The soul longs to live throughout eternity,

yet the fates will have nothing but its death.

It wishes it might attain happiness, but

God has written its misery in the Book.

What soul is as bereaved as one

whose brother the hands of Death have stolen?

O brother of my soul, behold, the soul has become

numbered among the spirits, from what has befallen it.

You were the eye’s delight; then it became

today, after you, unseen by its own slumber.

May the sky, after you, never water the carpet of the

earth with rain, until its soil dries out.

Alas, as sickness withered in your garden

your branches, whose fruit was sweet!

Alas, as the physician returned to announce

that those illnesses were hard to cure!

Alas, as souls spent the night bewildered,

and the throngs of sickbed visitors saw their hopes dashed!

O departed one, who went far away and left within

my entrails a ghada-wood fire whose blaze flares up!

To you I complain—if only you could hear my lament!

Ah, if only an 'ah' could help today!

So have mercy, O Death! How often you violate

the sanctuary of mortals’ sacred rights!

Suppose you ravaged all creatures without restraint,

and then spared neither their earth nor their sky:

yet Najib has a sanctity among humankind

that you, O Death, ought all the more to respect.
