May the downpour water it and greet its soil,
He watered it, greeted its soil, and the rain of droplets fell,
Though it has become desolate in a barren wilderness.
And if it became barren in a barren task,

Decay folded it away as a miser folds his cloak,
Time has covered it, covering the meager dress,
And what night and day fold away can never be unfolded.
And there is no unfolding for what is folded.

Lairs of lions and a refuge for speckled serpents,
The resting places of lions and the refuge of foxes
Where thicket and burrow adjoin in its hollows.
Neighbors in its plains, the ghoul and the burrow.

A star could almost lose its way in its courtyards,
The star nearly goes astray in its flat lands,
And the full moon turns from its darkness in terror.
And the moon escapes from its darkness in fear.

The hands of windblown sands have done to its encircling trench
The hands of time have done to its features
And its stones what time does to a free man.
What fate does to the free.

I stood there in the loneliness of night,
I stood in its wilderness in the night,
The longing hidden in my breast stirring the sorrow of that pause.
Its desolation provoked the deep anguish in my chest.

I remembered the old days that have passed
Of which only a faded trace of memory remained,
Of which there remains naught but regretful memories

And a life we thought, for its beauty, a garden
And a life we thought a garden of beauty
That rain had clothed in that beauty's varied flowers.
Which time has dressed in evanescent flowers.

So I began weeping while sorrow followed sorrow
Until I saw stone weeping to stone.
Until I saw the very rock weeping unto the rock

Save outpourings that overflow his intestines or tears that flow

And I have not found of things anything more intimate in the night,
That darkness unveiled, moonlit, in the palace courtyard.
Which the darkness has extended, silvery in the courtyard of the palace,

Studded at its edges with scattered pearls;
Whose edges are studded with scattered pearls

A fire from dawn, transforming it to embers;
And from dawn came fire that turned into cinders

As if the breeze of dawn in the air is a thought
Of poetry flowing through a realm of thought.
Of poetry flowing in the expanse of reflection

And in the palace, amid shade and water, was a graceful maiden,
And in the palace between shade and water is a maiden
Swaying without drunkenness, withdrawing without pride.
Who sways without drunkenness and turns away without arrogance

She shows you speaking eyes, silent,
As much wine as you wished, as much enchantment as you wished.
So whatever you wish of wine and whatever you wish of magic

I sported with her until the night spent itself
And fate wrapped it in the shroud of dawn.
And fate led it into the shroud of dawn

By your life, no crazed passion took my mind
Nor has wine's surge contended with me for my soul.
Nor did the chapter of wine dispute me

No longing stirred me, nor the trace of a dwelling
Neither did fervor provoke me nor a beloved’s abode
Effaced—but such is poetry's custom.
A sheltering, but thus is the way of poetry

And whoever has a spirit like my spirit, a talent
By care, pays no heed to union or estrangement.
For cares that pays no heed to union or separation

And no thought of gray has ever crossed my hair—
Nor did the thought of white hair in my hair once flow

A man of a hundred, walking slowly, as though,
Brother of a hundred that walks sure-footed as if
When walking on level ground, he were on a rugged mountain.
When walking in the plain or rugged terrain

When a man's heart grows old, his hope grows old,
If the heart of man grows young, his hopes grow young,
And his passion grows old, though he is in life's forenoon.
His passion grows young while in the prime of life

I lived with my hopes but when they betrayed me
I became content, caring neither for little nor for much.
I was content and paid no heed to much or little

When I taste it, lets me taste the repose of the grave.
Save the draught I taste when I taste the repose of the grave

A man's life is nothing but hopes;

Once they are lost, life follows in their wake.
If they are lost then life follow in succession

It spared me what the dashed hopes had cast

So I am not if time be displeased
Nor am I deluded when time brings joy.
Nor am I if time be deluded

Content with neither good nor evil

My master, pardon me: sorrow has a staggering blow
I ask you to pardon me, worries can sometimes
That sends a man's secret flying before he knows it.
Make one lose composure from what he knows not

And you made me land safely in the sea of your knowledge
There I was safe from ingratitude where gratitude was due.
I avoided there disbelief in what calls for gratitude

To you belongs the strong, dried pen
The idolatry that defied bright swords and dusky spears.
That rid its ink of the polytheism that made white and black weary
