ليهنكَmay it gladden you ياO بيلُBill الجلالُmajesty وعزةٌand honor
يكادُalmost لهاat it القلبُthe heart الكسيرُbroken يطيرُtakes flight
May majesty and honor gladden you, O Bill,
Glory and might are yours, O Bilal
at which the broken heart almost takes flight.
The broken heart almost takes flight
ملكتَyou have acquired علىdespite الزهدِdetachment الأُلوفَthousands وكلُّناand all of us
إلىfor قَطرةٍa drop مماof what ملكتَyou possess فقيرُin need
You have acquired thousands despite your indifference, and all of us
You have conquered thousands in asceticism, while we are all
are in need of a drop of what you possess.
Poor towards a single drop of what you have gained
إذاif كانis هذاthis الطوقُthe collar كالتَّاجlike the crown قيمةًin value
فأنتَthen you بألقابِof the titles الملوكkings جديرُworthy
If this collar equals a crown in value,
If this necklace is like a crown in value
then you are worthy of the titles of kings.
Then you deserve the titles of kings
وماand not المالُwealth إلاbut آيةُa sign of الجاهِrank فيamong الوَرىhumankind
فحيثُso wherever تراهُyou see it فالمقامُthen the standing خطيرُeminent
And wealth is nothing but a sign of rank among mankind;
And wealth is but a sign of status in the world
so wherever you see it, the standing is high.
So wherever you see it, the position is dangerous
ولوand if كانthere were بينbetween الفضلِmerit والجاهِand rank نسبةٌa connection
لزالتwould vanish عروشٌthrones جمّةٌmany وقصورُand palaces
And were there a connection between merit and rank,
And if there was a link between merit and status
many thrones and palaces would vanish.
Thrones and palaces would crumble and fall
فياso, O بيلُBill لاdo not تجزَعdespair فَرُبَّfor many a مُتَوَّجٍcrowned one
شبيهُكَlike you إلاexcept for منبرٌa pulpit وسريرُand a throne
So, O Bill, do not despair: many a crowned one
So O Bilal, do not despair, for many a crowned one
is like you, except for a pulpit and a throne.
Is like you, just a pulpit and a bed
وماand not أنتyou فيin جهلِignorance of المقاديرthe worth of things آيةٌa marvel
فمثلُكfor those like you بينamong الناطقينthose who speak كثيرُmany
Nor are you exceptional in your ignorance of the worth of things;
You are not ignorant of the measures of things
for many among those who speak are like you.
The likes of you among the articulate are many
لئنthough فاتكhas eluded you النطقُspeech الفصيحُeloquent كماas تَرىyou see
فسهمُكyet your share منof نُطقِspeech of الفؤادِthe heart وفيرُabundant
Though eloquent speech has eluded you, as you see,
If eloquent speech has eluded you, as you see
yet your share of the heart's speech is abundant.
Still your share of the heart's utterance is plentiful
وفيتَyou were faithful بعهدٍto a pledge للصديقto the friend وماbut not وَفَىwas faithful
بعهدِto a pledge of صديقٍa friend جرولٌJarwal وجَريرُand Jarir
You kept a pledge to a friend, yet neither
You have fulfilled the covenant of a friend, while
Jarwal nor Jarir kept a pledge to a friend.
No scoundrel or villain has kept a friend's covenant
فعشso live صامِتاًsilently واقنَعand be content بحظِّكwith your lot واغتبطand rejoice
فماfor not النطقُspeech إلاbut آفةٌan affliction وشرُورُand evils
So live silently, be content with your lot, and rejoice,
So live silent, content with your lot, glad
for speech is nothing but affliction and evil.
That speech is but harm and evils
ضَلالٌdelusion يرىsees الإنسانُa person فضلاًmerit لنفسهfor himself
وساعدُهand his arm فيin المَكرُمَاتِnoble deeds قصيرُshort
It is delusion for a man to see merit in himself
It is misguidance for a person to see merit in himself
while his arm falls short in noble deeds.
While his contribution to noble deeds is little
وماand not المرءُa person إلاbut صِدقُهhis truthfulness ووفاؤُهand his loyalty
وكلُّand every كبيرٍgreat man بعدbeyond ذاكthat صغيرsmall
And a man is nothing but his truthfulness and loyalty,
A person is only his sincerity and loyalty
and beyond that, every great man is small.
After that, every great one is small

And what good does a man's fine eloquence do him
Of what use is a person's eloquence
if his conscience cannot speak eloquently?
If his conscience is devoid of truthful speech?
مدحتُكI praised you ياO بيلٌBill لأنيbecause I am شاعرٌa poet

I praised you, O Bill, because I am a poet,
I praise you O Bilal, because I am a poet
and you are able to reward handsomely.
And you are well able to reward

And if you knew what I say, you would do for me
If you knew what I say, you would feed me
what no prince has done for those who praise him.
What no prince has fed the praisers
