زَاحفتُI battled أياميmy days وزاحفننيand they battled me
دهراًfor an age فلمand did not أنكلI flinch ولمand did not تنكلthey flinch
I battled my days, and they battled me
My days crept and crept me by
for an age; I did not flinch, nor did they.
An age, yet I did not weaken nor weaken
لاneither عزمهاtheir resolve واهٍweak ولاnor عزمتيmy resolve
تصادَمَclashed الجندلُthe stone بالجندلِwith the stone
Neither their resolve nor mine was weak;
Neither her will was frail, nor was my will
stone clashed with stone.
The pick collided with the pick
رمتthey shot فلمand did not تُبقِspare علىupon مفصِلٍa joint
لكنَّهاbut they طاشَتmissed عنaway from المقتلِthe vital spot
They shot, sparing not a single joint,
She threw but left no joint intact
yet they missed the vital spot.
Yet she swerved from killing
وليتَهاand would that they أصمتhad killed outright فماthen what أبتغيdo I seek
منfrom عيشهاlife with them إنif أناI لمnot أقتلِI am killed
Would that they had killed me outright! What do I seek
Would that she were deaf! For I do not seek
from life with them, if I am not slain?
A life with her if I were not killed
لاno خيرgood فيin الصبرpatience علىthrough غمرَةٍan overwhelming calamity
لاnot يأمَلُhopes الصابِرُthe patient sufferer أنthat تنجليit will clear
There is no good in patience through a calamity
No good in enduring turbulence
the patient sufferer has no hope will lift.
Where the patient hopes not for calm
صبرتُI endured فيin البأساءِhardship صَبرَwith the patience of الذيone who
قِيدَwas led إلىto القتلbeing killed فلمand did not يحفِلcare
In hardship I endured with the patience of one
I endured adversity with the patience of one
led to death who paid no heed.
Who is led to death indifferently
لاno فضلَmerit فيin الصبرِpatience لمستسلمٍfor one who surrenders
عيwas incapable عنof الفعلِaction فلمand did not يفعَلِact
There is no merit in the patience of one who surrenders,
No merit in the patience of one resigned
too helpless to act, and so doing nothing.
To inaction who did not act
عِشرونَtwenty عاماًyears لمnot تَحُلchange حالتيmy condition
ماhow أشبهsimilar الآخرَthe last بالأَوّلِto the first
For twenty years my condition has not changed;
Twenty years passed and my state unchanged
how like the first is the last!
How alike is the end to the start!
I go in the morning إلىto المَعملthe factory فيin شَملَةٍa cloak

I go each morning to the factory in a cloak
I go to work tattered
full of holes, which neither clothes nor covers me.
In rags that did not clothe or cover

It betrays my body, just as
Baring my body as my spirit bared
abundant, freely flowing tears betrayed my soul.
With copious tears streaming unchecked
كأنَّهاas though it were بُرقعُa face veil مِصريةٍan Egyptian woman
لاnot يَحجُبُhides الوجهthe face عنfrom المُجتلىthe beholder
As though it were an Egyptian woman's face veil,
As if they were an Egyptian veil
which hides no face from the beholder.
That does not conceal the face of the reviler
يميلُsways بيme الهمُّworry مَمِيلَlike the swaying of النَّقَاthe sand dune

Worry sways me like a sand dune
Sorrow sways me swaying
between the south wind and the north.
Between the south wind and the north

أجلyes بكأسِwith the cup of الحُزنِsorrow لاnot السّلسَلsmooth-flowing wine
So whoever sees me thinks me drunk;
Whoever saw me thought it was joy
yes, with the cup of sorrow, not smooth-flowing wine.
Nay, by the cup of sorrow, not chains

I spend my day going to and fro,
I spend my day going and returning
as though I were the machine in the factory.
As if I were a machine in the factory

And the factory owner accepts
And the owner is not pleased with me
nothing from me but crushing, burdensome toil.
Except with backbreaking toil

If I complain of my paltry wage,
If I complain of meager wages
he torments me with insults and shows no kindness.
He dismisses me with insults and gracelessness

When at last I return to my home,
Until I return to my home
I find a wretched life at home.
And find dire living conditions there

I see widows complaining of hunger
I see my days complaining of folds
to famished, emaciated orphans.
To hungry orphans stripped bare

I spend the night with sleepless eyelids,
I stay up while eyelids in slumber
as though they were tethered to Yadhbul,
As if tied to wither

among little children sleepless in the dark,
Among small children laid in the gloom
shedding the tears of a bereaved, destitute parent.
Shedding the tears of the bereft wet nurse

Among the unsteady of step, unsupported
and one staring in the cradle, not yet a year old.
And a newborn who has not yet turned over

They call to a mother consumed by sorrow
dreading a day of bereaving calamity,
Beware the day of grievous mishap

And a father heedless of sustaining them
in providing for them, as helpless as an unarmed horseman.
In life, oblivious horseman thrown off

Time's misfortunes have kept assailing me
The caprice of fate continued to seize me
with crushing calamity after calamity,
With one dire puzzle after another

Until it cast me into what left
only remnants of a soul in a bodily frame.
Only remnants of spirit in the body

So here I am today, laid low by wasting sickness,
So here I am today, broken by misery
and there is no refuge but patience.
With naught but patience as fortress

In the scorch of sun-baked ground, I have no protection,
In the inferno of heat, no shade protects me
and in the crosswind's gust, I find no warmth.
Nor do I seek the gift of slept eyes

This is misery, is there any hero
suffered it as fully as I have?
Who attained in misery what I attained?

So O, delighted of eye in his time
live at ease in the fortune coming your way,
Live soft in your blessed lineage

From between those dripping locks

Lamenting around me and hammering

My voice has grown hoarse, and my mind is spent,
My voice is hoarse, my thoughts scattered
and that ill fortune has taken its toll on my tongue.
And that curse has undone my words
