زَعَموا بِأَنَّ البَينَ بَعدَ غَدٍ

فالقَلبُ مِمّا أَحدَثوا يَجِفُ

فالقَلبُ مِمّا أَحدَثوا يَجِفُ

They claimed that parting would come the day after tomorrow.

They claimed that parting would come tomorrow

So the heart quivers at what they have brought about.

So the heart is desiccated by what they perpetrated

والعَينُ مُنذ أُجِدَّ بَينُهمُ

والعَينُ مُنذ أُجِدَّ بَينُهمُ

مِثلَ الجُمانِ دُموعُها تَكِفُ

مِثلَ الجُمانِ دُموعُها تَكِفُ

And the eye, since their parting was firmly decided—

And since they existed, the eye

its tears drip like pearls.

Weeps like a rainstorm

وَمَقالُها وَدُموعُها سُجُمٌ

وَمَقالُها وَدُموعُها سُجُمٌ

أَقلِل حَنينَكَ حينَ تَنصَرِفُ

أَقلِل حَنينَكَ حينَ تَنصَرِفُ

And her words, while her tears stream, are:

Its tears and laments are agonizing

“Lessen your yearning when you depart.”

Lessen your yearning when you leave

تَشكو وَنَشكو ما أَشَتَّ بِنا

تَشكو وَنَشكو ما أَشَتَّ بِنا

كُلٌّ بِوَشكِ البَينِ مُعتَرِفُ

كُلٌّ بِوَشكِ البَينِ مُعتَرِفُ

She laments, and we lament, what has driven us apart;

It complains and we complain of what has befallen us

each acknowledges that parting is near.

Each admitting, with the misery of separation
