عَفا بَينَ أَكنافِ المُشَقَّرِ فالحَضرِ
Is it for a ruin at the valley bend in Makkat al-Sidr,
From the ruins of Mekka's idols and date palms,
faded away between the environs of al-Mushaqqar and al-Hadr,
Between the clefts of the rugged and barren valley,
ظَلِلتُI lingered وَظَلَّand lingered القَومُthe company مِنfrom غَيرِother than; without حاجَةٍa need or purpose

لَدُن غُدوَةٍ حَتّى دَنَت حَزَّةُ العَصرِ
that I lingered, and the company lingered, with no purpose,
I rested while the people rested without need
from early morning until the afternoon hour drew near?
From the morning hours until the declining afternoon.

They mourn old days with Layla.
They weep for Layla's ancient vows,
And what does the company mourn in a deserted dwelling?
Yet why should the people weep for an abandoned abode?
