صَحِبتُكَI kept your company إِذwhen عَينيmy eye عَلَيهاover it غِشاوَةٌa veil
فَلَمّاso when اِنجَلَتit lifted قَطَّعتُI tore apart نَفسيmy soul أُلومُهاI reproach it
I kept your company when a veil lay over my eye;
When my eyes were blinded to you as a companion
so when it lifted, I tore my soul apart, reproaching it.
Then when they cleared I blamed myself
وَماand not بيin me وَإِنand even if أَقصَيتَنيyou cast me away مِنof ضَراعَةٍabasement
وَلاand not اِفتَقَرَتwas in need نَفسيmy soul إِلىof مَنone who يَضيمُهاwrongs it
And there is no abasement in me, even if you cast me away,
It matters not to me if you've denied me kindness
nor has my soul needed one who wrongs it.
Nor if my soul sought one who'd constrain it
عَطِفتُI turned عَلَيكَtoward you النَفسَthe soul حَتّىuntil كَأَنَمّاas though
بِكَفَّيكَin your two palms بُؤسيmy misery أَوor عَليكَupon you نَعيمُهاits bliss
I turned my soul toward you, until it was as though
I inclined my soul to you until it was as though
my misery lay in your two hands, or its bliss depended on you.
In your hands was my misery or its joy
