أتوني بالطبيب فساءَلُوه

أتوني بالطبيب فساءَلُوه

فلم يدرِ الطبيبُ بما يجيبُ

فلم يدرِ الطبيبُ بما يجيبُ

They brought me the physician and questioned him.

They brought the doctor to me and asked him,

But the physician did not know what to answer.

But the doctor did not know how to respond.

سقاني شربةً لم تُغنِ شيئاً

سقاني شربةً لم تُغنِ شيئاً

سوى أن زاد في القلب اللَّهيبُ

سوى أن زاد في القلب اللَّهيبُ

He gave me a draught that did no good,

He gave me a drink that did nothing,

except that the flame in my heart grew stronger.

Except increase the burning in my heart.

فقلتُ له ألا دعني لدائي

فقلتُ له ألا دعني لدائي

وقم واذهب لشأنك يا طبيبُ

وقم واذهب لشأنك يا طبيبُ

So I said to him, "Come now, leave me to my ailment;

So I said to him, "Leave me to my illness,

and rise and go about your business, O physician.

And go attend to your own affairs, O doctor."

دوائي في يدَي من كان دائي

دوائي في يدَي من كان دائي

فقال وما الدَّوا قلتُ الحبيبُ

فقال وما الدَّوا قلتُ الحبيبُ

My cure is in the hands of the one who was my ailment."

My remedy is in the hands of the one who is my illness.

Then he said, "And what is the cure?" I said, "The beloved."

When asked what the remedy was, I said, "My beloved."
