بات الحبيبُ منادمي

والسكر يصبغ وجنتَيهِ

The beloved spent the night as my drinking companion,

My beloved kept me company

and intoxication was coloring his cheeks.

The wine dyeing his cheeks

ثم اغتدى وقد ابتدا

صبغ الخمار بمقلتَيهِ

Then morning found him, and there began

Then he became drunk

the hangover's tinge in his eyes.

Dyeing his eyelids with the wine cup

وهبت له عيني الكرى

وهبت له عيني الكرى

وتعوَّضت نظراً إليهِ

وتعوَّضت نظراً إليهِ

My eye bestowed slumber on him,

I gave him my dear eyes

and in exchange I gazed upon him,

And compensated by gazing at him

شكراً لإحسان الزما

in gratitude for Time's kindness,

Grateful for the kindness of time

as it helps me with him.
