    Singing of love for him has become reproach,

    for love of him mingles torment with bliss.

    treachery—so it is with one who trusts beloveds.

    lies; so I came to doubt their truth.

    it is a blemish on a gray-haired man to play the youth.

    so perhaps they may raise a cloud of success.

    Behold the Prophet, honored with intercession

    for people when they have no power to speak.

    And as for his saying—may his God bless him—

    the Prophet's words suffice as truth:

    Those with needs who come to you are blessings upon you,

    and God has made gratitude for them obligatory.

    And when God loves a servant among you,

    He makes success flow through his hand, rewarding him.

    and guidance for whoever seeks the finest conduct.

    which, if divided into plots, would yield wide expanses;

    ماءٌ لَجُرِّدَ للملوك شرابا

    and sweet qualities of yours which, if they were

    water, would be set apart as a drink for kings;

    كانت لأقراط الذكاء شهابا

    and a luminous creative gift which, if embodied,

    would be a meteor for the earrings of intellect;

    إذ وعد غيرِك يستحيل سرابا

    whereas another's promise turns into a mirage;

    the stirrings of men's understanding as plunder.
