مَنone who عينُهhis eye قطّever لمdid not تلتذّtake pleasure بالنظرِin seeing
فَلِمso why يُعَذِّبُهاhe torments it فيin العشقlove بالسَّهَرِwith sleeplessness
One whose eye has never taken pleasure in seeing—
He whose eye never delighted in seeing,
why does he torment it with sleeplessness in love?
Why then does he torment it with sleeplessness in passion?
أعمىa blind man يحنّyearns إلىfor مَنone whom ليسdoes not ينظرهsee him
هذاthis لعمريby my life منamong الآياتthe marvels والعِبَرِand the lessons
A blind man yearns for one he does not see;
A blind man yearns for one he cannot see,
this, by my life, is among the marvels and lessons.
This is truly a sign and lesson.
والعشقand love أكبرtoo great أنto تُحصىbe counted كبائرُهُits enormities
لكنَّyet عشقlove العَمىblindness منamong أكبرthe greatest الكُبَرِenormities
And love is too vast for its enormities to be counted;
And passion is too great for its sins to be counted,
yet love in blindness is among the greatest enormities.
Yet the passion of the blind is among the greatest sins.
الحبُّlove أعمىblind وذاand this man أعمىblind يحبُّloves وذاand this man

Love is blind, and this blind man loves; and he,
Love is blind, and a blind man loves another blind,
on both counts, is blind in heart and sight.
So both heart and sight are blind by analogy.

If his beloved possessed pleasing speech,
If his beloved had a beautiful voice,
or a soft touch, or a waft of perfume,
Or soft touch, or an aroma’s origin,
قلناwe would say يلذُّtakes pleasure بشمٍّin smelling أوor ملامسةٍtouching
أوor مسمعٍsound حينwhen لاnot يلتذُّtakes pleasure بالنظرِin seeing

we would say he delights in scent or touch,
We’d say he delights in smelling, touching,
or sound, when he finds no delight in sight.
Or hearing, since he delights not in seeing.

But his beloved is thorns to the touch,
But his beloved in touch is prickly,
and clamor in speech, and filth in smell.
In speech noisy, in smell malodorous.
لوif كانwere ممَّنamong those who لهhe has فيabout حسنهhis beauty خَبَرٌa report

Had he been one who had heard of his beloved's beauty,
If he knew his beloved’s beauty,
we would tell him his love, in ignorance, was based on that report.
We’d say his passion’s ignorant against knowledge.

What love is there in one who does not know whether his heart's desire
He loves one whose nature he knows not,
has the form of a monkey or the form of the moon?
Whether ape-like, or moon-like in form.

A blind man is sung to when longing troubles him:
A blind man sings when longing disquiets him,
"I turn my eye—why do I not see the moon?"
“My eyes I'll turn, for I cannot see the moon.”
