يا حَسَناً اسمه له صفةٌ

بديع حُسنٍ سَوّاه خالِفُهُ

بديع حُسنٍ سَوّاه خالِفُهُ

O Hasan, whose name describes him!

O beauty, his name suits his qualities

A marvel of beauty, fashioned by his successor.

Of exquisite beauty made perfect by its opposite

للغصن من قَدِّه شمائلُه

للغصن من قَدِّه شمائلُه

للظبي من جيده سَوالفُهُ

للظبي من جيده سَوالفُهُ

The bough draws its graces from his stature;

Like the graceful branches to the tree trunk

The gazelle draws its neck's contours from his neck.

And the neck to the gazelle

يستقبح الظلمَ وهو فاعلُه

يستقبح الظلمَ وهو فاعلُه

وينكر الحقَّ وهو عارفُهُ

وينكر الحقَّ وهو عارفُهُ

He finds injustice ugly, yet he commits it;

He hates injustice though he is its maker

And he denies the truth, though he knows it.

And denies the truth though knowing it

تُهدي إليَّ الهوى رَوادفُه

تُهدي إليَّ الهوى رَوادفُه

إذا تهادَت به رَوادفُهُ

إذا تهادَت به رَوادفُهُ

His haunches bring me passion

Passion leads me to its haunts

When his haunches sway gently with him.

When it comes accompanied by its mates

وعيشِه ما حسدتُ غيرَ فتىً

وعيشِه ما حسدتُ غيرَ فتىً

يُبلى فيهوى من لا يخالفُهُ

يُبلى فيهوى من لا يخالفُهُ

By his life, I have envied none but a young man

I envy none their life but the youth

Who is afflicted, then loves one who does not resist him.

Who is consumed by a love none can rival
