My soul be ransom for one who draws near as though drawing away,

wary of tale-bearers, yearning yet seeming to renounce desire.

He keeps to caution in love, so his tongue

is distant, while his heart does not turn away.

My lord, your words are sparing in speech,

but your heart is lavish in faithfulness.

And I see that beneath your reserve, maintained for decorum,

are glances from an eye bearing witness to love.

It is a favor of yours I cannot thank you for enough:

that you turned toward me after your father's prohibition.

If all the world were against me,

it would not harm me, if you yourself were my ally.

And when hearts unite in love,

they devise ways to foil the schemer's plot.

My heart said, when it saw you keeping away from me,

and saw you watching for a lapse in my watcher's vigilance:

"The beloved has turned away, yet I have found for his turning

an excuse, so I bear the beloved no resentment."

My distress, when I see estrangement in you,

    is a patient's distress at a visitor's dejection.

So when we come to an understanding, every deceiver

    thereafter hammers on cold iron.

I shall surely act with tact and be envied; whoever wins

union with one like you must bear with the envious.

One is not forsaken for the sake of a thousand,

but a thousand are honored for the sake of one.

Your qualities are perfect: in you is Jupiter's beauty

among the stars, and in you is Mercury's form.

So when I look, I see beauty embodied,

and when I put you to the test, I see virtue embodied.

By God, I seek union for no illicit purpose

(or else, may my forearm never be joined to my hand),

but for the pleasure of correspondence and flirtation,

and of affection, conversation, and exchanging verse.

Such was once the love of the refined; it is only

in this corrupt age that love has been corrupted.
