Look at the coquetry of this coquettish charmer;
Look at the alluring charm of this beauty
you will behold a radiant beauty, joyful in his gaze.
Whose glances bring joyful delight

Look at him whose light shone forth and cleared
Look at the one whose light has shone through
our sight; whenever you see him, you quiver.
Dazzling our sights, so gaze on him thrillingly

A prince of beauty appeared to people in robes
of splendor, his form woven into it.
Of such splendor, perfectly well-tailored

A prince of beauty, he shows us among his charms
This prince of beauty shows us with his charms
troops that have left people's hearts in a cloud of dust.
An army that occupies people's hearts zealously
إذاwhen العيونthe eyes بذاكwith that المنظرsight اكتحلتare lined with kohl
رأينَthey see ماwhat غيرهis other than it فيin منظرa sight سمجِugly
When eyes take that sight for their kohl,
When eyes are lined with seeing him
they see all else as an ugly sight.
They see nothing else as crude or vulgar
فكلماso whenever كحلتI line with kohl عينيmy eye برؤيتهby seeing him
زادincreases البلاءthe affliction علىupon قلبٍa heart بهin him بَهِجِdelighted
So whenever I line my eye with the sight of him,
The more my eyes are lined in seeing him
the torment grows for a heart that delights in him.
The more my heart's affliction and joy increase

His smiling mouth has made pearls and coral needless,
He has outshone pearls' laughter and coral's mirth
and the rose is shamed by his crimson cheek.
While the rose is shy of his blushing cheeks

He walks, and the branches tremble in astonishment,
He walks and branches quiver in awe
and the water's trembling is plain in the depths.
The water's unrest becomes obvious in ponds

Each wishes to imitate his manner,
Each thing wants to tell its tale of him
and between them lie ranks hard to ascend.
Though their ranks are hard to precisely gauge

For in the swaying of his flanks lie my temptations,
In the coquetry of his flirtations is my temptation
and in the fullness of his buttocks lies my relief.
In the undulation of his hips is my enjoyment

I would ransom you, jet-black one, wholly black as jet;
I'd sacrifice myself for one so perfectly charming
for your hair is all tight curls, and your kohl is coquetry.
Poetry springs from his curls, kohl from his eyes
نُغنَىwe are made self-sufficient بوجهكby your face عنwithout need of شمسa sun وعنand without need of قمرٍa moon

With your face, we have no need of sun or moon,
Your face makes sun and moon unnecessary to us
and the fire of your cheeks spares us the need for lamps.
Your fiery cheeks suffice us instead of torches

I say to the reproacher, arguing in rebuke:
I say to the critic admonishing reproachfully
"Look at him—how many arguments I have in him!"
Look at him - how much proof of him I have!

Were the heart shaken by an earthquake, unshaken would remain
If the heart quaked with an earthquake, still
my love for you; so stand firm, untroubled.
My love for you would remain unshaken

I drank your love undiluted, with nothing mixed into it;
I drank your love purely, unmingled
so give me union to drink, pure and unmixed.
So let our union give me pure untainted drink

For seeing you brings me to life and kills me,
Seeing you brings me life and death
and because of you my soul is in death and burning heat.
And my passions for you are in death and fervor

If you feel scruples over a pledge he breaks,
If you feel uneasy about a pact betrayed
the slave is your slave, so kill him without scruple.
Then kill the slave without discomfort
