In me are longing and anguish like those in you.

But I veil love with patience and endurance.

I guard myself against the slanderers making sport of me,

even if illnesses play within my body.

I have undertaken a patience beneath which lies distress,

so I find myself both exhausted and striving.

Were it not for loyalty, were it not for the pledge, you would not see me

melting with longing, yet complaining to no one.

I shall surely seek help in concealment, waiting,

for many a day's hardship holds tomorrow's good.

Better death peering into my soul and my body

than my enemies peering into my innermost thoughts.

They used to plunge into reproaching me; then I was aided

by union with the beloved, so today they plunge into envying me.

They once disparaged him to me while he was shunning me,

and competed with me for him when he was at my hand's command.

I turn away from them out of apprehension, making them suppose

that I have ceased to pine, though my heart has not turned from him.

My endurance is a resource for me in love; so when

I am requited in this affair, I do not neglect my resources.

    فأرصُد العيشَ والتنغيص في رصدِ

    This is union, and this, short of it, is hope;

so I watch for life's joys, while vexation lies in wait.

And oh, what a blessing through which I have tasted misery!

For in my mouth is bitter colocynth from a mouthful of honeycomb.

Nearness is more trying for the afflicted than distance,

and my anguish is simply because we are in the same town:

    I see what I long for, and see how I myself am denied it;

that is why I suffer the anguish I suffer.

He has not vanished from me; rather, the joy of him has vanished,

so I weep for one lost, yet not absent.

    I weep for my sorrow, not for his dwelling;

what brought ruin upon Lubad has brought ruin upon it.

I rest my hope on gracious patience, and do not

    lay saddle-frames upon a swift, sturdy she-camel.
