فلا أَنت معشوق ولا أنا عاشقُ

If we settle for contact in love,

If we're content with just conversing about passion

Then you are not a beloved, nor am I a lover.

Then you're no beloved, and I'm no ardent lover

فلا وصل إلا أن يكون تباذُلٌ

فلا وصل إلا أن يكون تباذُلٌ

ولا بذل إلا أن يكون تَعَانُقُ

ولا بذل إلا أن يكون تَعَانُقُ

For there is no union without mutual giving,

So there's no union unless it's an exchange

And no giving without an embrace.

No giving unless it's an embrace

إذا لم يتمّ الوصل والبذل في الهوى

إذا لم يتمّ الوصل والبذل في الهوى

فأُمُّ الهوى من بعد هذينِ طالقُ

فأُمُّ الهوى من بعد هذينِ طالقُ

If union and giving are not fulfilled in love,

If joining and giving don't occur in passion

Then, after these two, love’s mother is divorced.

Then after these two, passion's mother is divorced
