فديتكmay I be your ransom ماnot للدَّهرbecause of fate فيكconcerning you وللقلىand out of aversion
خلوتُI sought solitude ولكنbut للصيانةfor protection والسترِand concealment
I would ransom you! Not because of fate, nor out of aversion to you,
My dear, neither fate nor burning coals can harm you,
did I seek solitude, but for protection and concealment.
I secluded myself but for modesty and concealment,
لعلّيperhaps I أنالI attain الأنسcompanionship فيin حجبveils خلوةٍseclusion
كذاكthus يُنالis obtained الدرُّpearls فيin غامضhidden depths البحرِthe sea
Perhaps I may find companionship behind the veils of seclusion;
Perhaps I may find intimacy in the seclusion of withdrawal,
so are pearls obtained in the sea's hidden depths.
Just as pearls are obtained in the depths of the sea.
أُريدI wish بأنthat يخفىbe hidden علىfrom الناسِpeople وَقفُهhis standing
فأخفىso I am hidden وهلand can يخفىbe hidden الوقوفstanding معwith البدرِthe full moon
I wish his standing there to be hidden from people;
I want my stance to be hidden from people,
so I am hidden—but can standing beside the full moon be hidden?
So I hid it, though how can stances hide with the full moon?
إذاwhen ماan emphatic particle رأيتُI see الشوقlonging يُجريsets running خيولهits horses
لكشفto reveal الهوىlove صيَّرتُI made ميدانَهits arena صدريmy breast
Whenever I see longing set its horses running,
When I saw longing spurring its horses
to reveal love, I make my breast its arena.
To reveal passion, I made my chest its racecourse.
ثَنىturned aside عنكaway from you طرفيmy gaze لحظُthe glance طرفكyour eye فانثنىso it turned aside
كذاكthus خُمارhangover الخمرwine يُكسَرis broken بالخمرِby wine
The glance of your eye turned my gaze from you, and it turned aside;
My gaze turned away from you for a glance of your gaze, so it turned away-
so is wine's hangover dispelled by wine.
Just as wine's veil is torn by wine.
ويصبحand becomes ريحانُsweet basil الهوىlove حينwhen نلتقيwe meet
نَماءَflourishing المنىwishes منfrom ذلكthat النظرglance الشزرِsidelong
And love's sweet basil, when we meet, becomes
And the basil of passion becomes dew when we meet
the flourishing of wishes from that sidelong glance.
From that amorous glance, refreshing wishes.
وتنظرand you look فيinto حاليmy condition وذاكand that هوىdesire المنىwishes
وفوقand beyond المنىwishes لوif كنتَyou were تنظرyou look فيinto أمريmy affairs
And you consider my condition—that is what my wishes seek;
You look upon my state-that is the wish of desires-
and it would surpass my wishes if you would consider my plight.
Above wishes, if only you would look into my affairs!
عذرتُI excused حبيبيmy beloved أنthat أقامhe persisted علىin هجريforsaking me
لأنbecause ذنوبيmy sins قدindeed كثرنhave multiplied علىbeyond العذرexcuse
I excused my beloved for persisting in forsaking me,
I forgave my beloved if he shunned me,
because my sins have multiplied beyond excuse.
For my sins against him were many, despite excuses.
بُليتُI was afflicted بذنبٍwith a sin فوقatop ذنبيmy sin لشقوتيto my misery
وماand how أوجعpainful العَقرthe wound الأليمagonizing علىupon العقرِthe wound
I was afflicted with a sin atop my sin, to my misery;
I was afflicted with a sin atop my sin due to my misery,
and how agonizing is a grievous wound upon a wound!
And how the painful fracture pains the fracture!
وماand not أناI إلاexcept مثلlike جابرone who mends عَظمِهhis bone
فلمّاthen when بَرَاit healed ثَنّىhe followed up بكَسرٍwith a fracture علىupon الجَبرِthe bone-setting
And I am only like one who set his own bone,
I am but like one whose bone was broken,
then, when it healed, followed the mending with another fracture.
So when it mended it bent with a crooked mending.
أسأتُI did wrong إلىto منone who لمnot يزلcease بيَto me محسناًkind
فحقّيso my due بأنthat أُرميI be struck بقاصمةby a breaker الظهرِthe back
I wronged one who never ceased being kind to me,
I wronged one who never ceased benefiting me,
so I deserve to be struck by a back-breaking calamity.
So I deserve to be pelted from behind with stones.
أيعرفdoes he recognize قدريmy worth ثمthen أجهلI fail to recognize قدرَهُhis worth
فلاso may not عرفrecognize الرحمنthe All-Merciful منfrom دونهاwithout it قدريmy worth
Does he recognize my worth, and I then fail to recognize his?
Does he know my worth yet I am ignorant of his worth?
Then may the All-Merciful not recognize my worth without it.
Beyond it I know not the value of the Merciful.
حراميَّةthievery منّيon my part أتيهI act haughtily علىover الذيthe one who
بداخلهwithin him تيهpride علىover الشمسthe sun والبدرand the full moon
It is thievery on my part to lord it over one
It was forbidden, my coming to him
who inwardly holds himself above the sun and the full moon.
With that which destroys me, though the sun and moon destroy me.
فياso, O ليلةًa night أدركتُهاI reached it وحُرمتُهاand I was denied it
وكنتand I was كمحرومٍlike one deprived رأىsaw ليلةthe Night القدرِof Decree
Ah, a night I reached, yet was denied!
Oh, the night I attained but was deprived of!
And I was like one deprived who saw the Night of Decree.
I was like the bereft who saw the Night of Power.
فياso, O نعمةًa blessing فاتتpassed away وياand O محنةًan ordeal أتتcame
فموتٌso death علىupon فَوتٍloss وقتلٌand killing علىfor كفرِingratitude
Ah, a blessing that passed, and ah, an ordeal that came!
Oh, the bounty missed, and oh, the tribulation come!
So death upon loss, and killing for ingratitude.
So death for loss, and murder in unbelief.
أباO father of حسنٍHasan ماwhat حيلتيmy means ووسيلتيand my recourse
أبِنexplain ليto me فإنيfor I قدindeed تحيَّرتُI have become bewildered فيabout أمريmy affair
O Abu Hasan, what can I do, and what recourse have I?
Father of Hasan , what can be my trick and stratagem?
Explain it to me, for I have become bewildered about my plight.
Advise me, for I have become lost in my affairs.
أأصبرshall I endure للهجرانwith estrangement أمor أطلبI seek الرضاapproval
وهيهاتand how far off أنthat ترضىyou be pleased وهيهاتand how far off منfrom صبريmy patience
Should I endure estrangement, or seek your favor?
Shall I be patient with estrangement, or seek approval?
And how far off is your favor, and how far from me is patience!
Alas, it is vain that she be pleased, and vain that I show patience!
